Study programmes and courses

There are three forms of attending academic studies in Romania: day (full-time) education, part-time education and distance education. The two last forms are targeted at adult training and they may only be provided by universities that organise full-time courses as well. Part-time and distance study programmes are usually one academic year longer that full-time programmes.

In Romanian universities, a student takes 8-12 courses each semester, simultaneously. Usually, each course is composed of two hours of teaching and two of seminars and workshops, per week.

There are three types of courses: compulsory courses, which are to be taken by all students registred in a study programme, optional courses (every student must choose one course from the offered variants) and elective courses (students are free to choose weather to take these courses or not).
