Program description

Mission

The Preparatory Year for Romanian language is a one-year study program, aiming to develop Romanian language competencies and skills, as well as competencies specific to a certain field of studies.

The program particularly meets the needs of International Students who wish to pursue Romanian-taught graduate and postgraduate studies in one of the Romanian higher education institutions. The program also offers for students the opportunity to know and gain experience and confidence in studying academic subjects in the Romanian university environment.

 

Language competencies for fields of study: 

  • Health (Medicine, Dental Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy)
  • Mathematics and natural sciences (Informatics, Computer Sciences)
  • Social Sciences (Psychology, Law, Economics, Communication, International Relations)

 

Further studies

After completing this program, students can apply for Bachelor’s programs, Master’s programs, postgraduate programs or PhD programs taught in Romanian language at Titu Maiorescu University or at any university in Romania, in accordance with the admission procedure for each program.

Course information

Course outline

The academic year is structured in two semesters of 14 weeks each, with an average of approximately 25 hours per week. The classes are held during weekdays, 08:00 – 20:00. Each semester has 30 transferable study credits in the European system (ECTS).

The program consists of language lessons and specialized subjects based on the student’s future field of study.

By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the necessary qualifications for a B1 language proficiency level (as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

First semester

The first semester is focused on the four components of learning Romanian: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

  • Grammar
  • Phonetics
  • Vocabulary
  • Verbal and written communication
  • Reading, listening and speaking

The students will also study the course of Romanian Culture and Civilization, which aims to familiarize the international students with various aspects of Romanian culture and civilization. The course covers topics such as Romanian geography and history, folklore, literature, relevant cultural and art phenomena, etc.

Second semester

In the second semester, will continue the courses for Romanian Language and Romanian Culture and Civilization,  and also the students will be provided with specialized language training for the field domain chosen by the student for future studies. The students will achieve language fluency and communication abilities (discussions, argumentation) in a certain domain.

The classes will concentrate also on the development of independent study skills to improve the student’s ability to take notes, to give presentations, use analytical and critical abilities, and to attend conferences.

During the course a number of teaching methods may be used, including:

  • revision workshops

 

Coursework and assessment

Courses are assessed using a wide range of methods across the many years of study, including: online tests, reflective essays, practical papers or projects, exercises, verbal presentations, written assignments, viva voce and written exams.

The Preparatory Year study program is completed by a graduation exam at the end of the second semester.

The faculty has state-of-the-art educational spaces: amphitheaters, classrooms, seminar and reading rooms equipped with smart whiteboards, library, publishing house, bookstore, computer network, video conferencing equipment, etc.
